Our Graduation
Tuesday, June 18th, 1963, 8:00 p.m.
To the music of Sir Edward William Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance we passed a symbolic diploma among ourselves.
Mrs. Pearl Jacobs had prepared us (all 500 graduates?) to sing Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor (music by Irving Berlin and lyrics by Emma Lazarus from her sonnet "The New Colossus" written in 1883. In 1903, the poem was engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.) and You'll Never Walk Alone a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel.
